New Developments in Germany

Germany PropertyThe Republic of Germany is a northern European country with its north-western border on the North Sea, its north-eastern border on the Baltic Sea and Denmark lying to the north in between. It borders more countries than any other in Europe - France, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands to the west, Poland and the Czech Republic to the east and Austria and Switzerland to the south. It enjoys a temperate climate with milder winters in the west and plentiful rainfall and is famed for its Bavarian Alps, impressive rivers (such as the Elbe, the Rhine and the famous Blue Danube) and supposedly haunted Black Forest with its stunning scenery, gateau and traditional cuckoo clock industry.

But its culture extends much further, playing a huge part in European literature (Goethe and Grimm), music and philosophy (Leibniz, Kant, Marx and Nietzsche), music (Mozart, Bach, Beethoven and Wagner), science (Einstein and Freud) art and cinema. It is also famed for beautiful wines such as Riesling from the vineyards of the south-west and for its beer, celebrated every year at the Stuttgart beer festival or the two-week Munich Oktoberfest (oddly enough in September!), where you can sample as many beers as you are able and enjoy rides, music and street parties.

The 82½ million-strong population’s love of good food and drink includes the tradition of afternoon coffee with fantastic cakes and pastries and they enjoy a high standard of living, especially in the west. They also welcome visitors – around 15.7 million in 2006. The German National Tourist Board provides marketing services for international travel, working with many organisations involved in promoting German tourism, from city tours to health resorts. The capital, Berlin, is a cosmopolitan metropolis and Germany's largest city, home of the Berlin Philharmonic and rich in entertainment, recreation and academia, with theatres, museums, architecture and the annual Berlinale film festival.

The largest conurbation is the west-central Rhine-Ruhr region, including the Düsseldorf-Cologne district and Essen, Dortmund, Duisburg and Bochum. Property is an excellent investment now, particularly in east Berlin, where a recovery from recession means an increased demand from business for prime space and the government is working for a positive impact on real estate. The Western economy is mainly industrial, particularly strong in chemicals, car manufacture, engineering and technology.

The unified economy is now the third largest in the world after America and Japan and the largest of all the EU member states. A member of the UN and NATO, Germany is a democratic parliamentary federal republic, dominated by the Christian Democratic Union and the Social Democratic Party, with an electoral system that favours alliances rather than one party governments, an independent judiciary and most administrative matters in the jurisdiction of individual states.
