New Developments in Romania

Romania PropertyRomania, the largest country in southeastern Europe, lies east of Hungary and Serbia, south-west of Ukraine and north of Bulgaria. It is made up of a mixture of hills and lowlands with the Carpathian mountains curving across the middle. Here, in mountain resorts like Sinaia, Poiana Brasov, Busteni, Predeal and Azuga, there are superb ski slopes and excellent apres-ski facilities. The Carpathians also house chamois goats and the largest number of brown bears in Europe, making this an eco-tourism centre. But probably the biggest attraction, along with agro-tourism and spa-tourism, is the region of Transylvania and the fact that this is the country of Vlad the Impaler, better known as Dracula! Tours visit Sighisoara, his birthplace, the Snagov Monastery where he is thought to be buried, his castle and his palace of Curtea Domneasca in Bucharest. There is even a Castle Dracula Hotel.

Transylvania ia said to be situated on a strong magnetic field and vampires are said to frequent crossroads on St. George's Day and the eve of St. Andrew’s Day. The forests are as dark and ancient as the films portray. Another legend, the Pied Piper of Hamelin, has the lost children of Hamelin coming into Transylvania, near Sibiu, named the European Capital of Culture 2007. Tourism of this kind makes a $US589 million contribution to one of the fastest-growing economies in Europe, predicted to grow even faster now that Romania has joined the EU, with a resultant growth in disposable income and increase in the population’s spending.

Air transportation and high-end accommodation show record growth and an increasing number of foreigners are doing business here, including companies such as Procter & Gamble who have a plant here, while unemployment is as low as 2% in the capital city of Bucharest and in the west. The 22 million-strong population, just over half of whom live in urban areas, is 89% Romanian, with significant minorities of Hungarians and Roma and a 45,000-strong German community. There are nearly 4 million small private farms and at altitudes of 700-2,000 feet, there are mineral resources, orchards, pastures and vineyards.

The culture is just as rich and varied, with influence from the Balkans, Greece and the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires and also from French and German culture. Literature and music are important and traditional harvest and fertility customs are practised alongside the orthodox Christian tradition. Traditional folk arts include wood carving, ceramics, weaving and embroidery of costumes and storytelling. There is a rich tradition of folk music – particularly the doina (a sad ballad about home or love) - and of lively group dances such as hora and căluşari. Romania is a presidential republic and a Prime Minister and two-chamber Parliament democratically elected for 4 years.
