New Developments in UK

UK PropertyThe islands of the UK, made up of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, lie north-west across the Channel from France and have shores on the North and Irish Seas and the Atlantic. The temperate climate, with plentiful rainfall and variable seasons, makes the weather a talking point for its people – but this is because it is so interesting and unpredictable, rather than because they are boring! It is a beautiful and varied land of mountains, hills, lowlands and fens – with Scotland in the north famed for Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles, and its highlands, islands and lochs, Northern Ireland for its green hills and misty mountains, Wales for Mount Snowdon, mining valleys and male voice choirs and England for its downlands, little fields and hedgerows and its great rivers, the Thames (immortalised in literature), the Severn and the Humber. These, with its railways, formed the backbone of the transport system that made the UK an economic power and home of the Industrial Revolution.

It is a maritime nation and once had an empire covering ¼ of the world. It is still a leading trading power and financial centre and produces 60% of food for its population of 60 million. It has large coal, natural gas and oil reserves and one of the strongest economies in Europe, with low inflation, interest rates, and unemployment and constantly improving education and transport systems. House prices reflect the booming property market and the financial and business service industries account for the largest share of GDP, with tourism bringing in £3.8 billion from over 8 million visitors.

The cosmopolitan capital city of London, served by five international airports, is often the first port of call for these visitors - in particular, Buckingham Palace (the official residence of the Queen), the Houses of Parliament, The Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and now the London Eye. It is packed with museums and galleries and is famous worldwide for its theatres, as is Stratford on Avon, home of the most famous playwright of all, William Shakespeare. Other leading British literary figures from an impossibly long list include Chaucer, Austen, the Brontës (whose Yorkshire village of Haworth is a major tourist attraction), Dylan Thomas, Robert Louis Stevenson and Oscar Wilde, as well as Milton, Wordsworth, Byron and Auden.

The UK is a constitutional monarchy, whose Queen Elizabeth II is Head of State, and is governed by a two-chamber democratically elected parliament, with three main parties, the Conservatives, Labour and the Liberal Democrats and devolved parliaments or assemblies for Wales and Scotland and Northern Ireland’s in negotiation. The UK is a permanent member of the Security Council, the G8, NATO, the UN and the EU and a political, economic and military world power second only to the United States.
