The 50 states of the USA vary as much from each other as do many of the other separate countries listed on this site from each other. It is an enormous land mass of over 3 ½ million square miles and the third or fourth largest single country in the world. With Mexico to the south and Canada to the north, it lies between the Pacific and the Atlantic and is a land of every type of terrain and climate, from mountains such as the Rockies, stretching from north to south through the centre of the western states (and housing Yellowstone National Park), to the 25,000 square miles of the Mohave Desert, including the famous Death Valley, stretching from south-eastern California and Arizona into Nevada and Utah. The eastern seaboard ranges from temperate New England with its stunning Autumn colours to the subtropical climate of Florida, famed for its Everglades, Disneyworld and the Cape Canaveral space centre. The Midwest houses vast plains and the Great Lakes and is the birthplace of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers.

States like Montana are rich in agriculture and livestock and the Great Plains have been called ‘the breadbasket of the world’. Other areas of success in this capitalist mixed economy are the tourist industry (ranked third in the world), exports such as aircraft, weapons, electronics and steel, IT (with Microsoft and Google in Silicon Valley), the car industry in Detroit and of course ‘showbiz’, with Los Angeles the world capital of the film and TV industry. The capitalist mixed economy is strong in sole proprietorships, with minimum government interference, and the ‘American Dream’ promises a high degree of individual long-term social mobility for its 300 million people.

This multicultural population reflects the idea of America as ‘the land of the free’ and a magnet for immigration - from colonial settlers to Europeans fleeing oppression, from West African slaves to Irish and Scots seeking a new life – and the food and culture reflect all these - from corn and squash to pizza to burritos. The capital city is Washington, famous for its monuments such as the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial and, of course, for the White House, seat of the US government and official home of the President.

The US is a federal democratic republic, with human rights such as freedom of speech and worship enshrined in a Constitution and Bill of Rights, an elected president and an elected government consisting of a legislative body known as the Congress, with two chambers (the Senate and the House of Representatives) and an appointed judiciary. Individual states also have elected politicians. The two main parties are the Republicans and the Democrats. The US is a member of the UN and NATO.
